Butterflies in Babylon kicks off this weekend and we are getting excited to see our beautiful family! Are you new to The Gardens of Babylon? Take some time to read about the dresscode at our events..

We celebrate the art of dressing up as a way to honor ourselves and uplift our spirits. It’s not just about looking good; it’s about feeling good from the inside out. When you put in that extra effort to dress up, you’re making a statement to the world and to yourself that a good time has arrived. This means that you should avoid dressing up as if you’re going to the Dutch carnaval celebration. Please step away from any sailor, pirate, dinosaur costumes!

Cultural Appropriation
You will see that gleaming caftans/kimono’s, metallic leggings, and feathered headpieces are popular items amongst our crowd, and we celebrate all fashion styles and (sub)cultures. But we see a fine line between cultural appreciation and cultural appropriation. At The Gardens of Babylon, we value and respect the rich diversity of cultures around the world. Wearing a plastic feathered headdress that closely resembles traditional Native American attire is an example of cultural appropriation, which we strive to avoid.

Cultural appropriation occurs when elements of a marginalized culture are taken out of context, often without permission, and used in a way that can be disrespectful or harmful. Instead, we encourage our community to celebrate diversity in a way that is respectful and informed.

When choosing your outfits, please be mindful and considerate of the origins and significance of cultural symbols and attire. Embrace creativity and self-expression while honoring the traditions and heritage of others. By doing so, we can create a more inclusive and respectful environment for everyone.

In need of help and input, you can find the most amazing festival outfits at The Market of Curiosities.

Remember, a kind word can go a long way. So, as you walk through our community, take a moment to appreciate and compliment the beautiful people around you who have also put in that effort. Together we build a positive, supportive environment where everyone feels valued and seen. Let’s all pay it forward and spread those good vibes!
