You will see that gleaming caftans/kimono’s, metallic leggings, and feathered headpieces are popular items amongst our crowd, and we celebrate all fashion styles and (sub)cultures. But we see a fine line between cultural appreciation and cultural appropriation. At The Gardens of Babylon, we value and respect the rich diversity of cultures around the world. Wearing a plastic feathered headdress that closely resembles traditional Native American attire is an example of cultural appropriation, which we strive to avoid.
Cultural appropriation occurs when elements of a marginalized culture are taken out of context, often without permission, and used in a way that can be disrespectful or harmful. Instead, we encourage our community to celebrate diversity in a way that is respectful and informed.
